I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it had to be shared. the Rotary is now not in the works says the new CEO, its "not a viable option" i think im going to be sick.

Because it's part of what makes Mazda different, and recognisable.
Definitely a long-shot, but at one point the standard piston engine was thirsty and had a penchant for long-term reliability issues. It's just everyone's been developing them, whereas it's pretty much just been Mazda (with a couple of other entrants) who's been developing the rotary.

Yes, and there's a reason that no one has been developing them. You can only polish a turd for so long before you have to admit that it is, in fact, still a turd (then use it for fertilizer for your next project, as long as you stopped polishing it before they locked you away for being insane).
Being different doesn't work in the auto market, at least not if you want to be profitable.

Unfortunately, when most people start car shopping this isn't what they say "I'd like a car with the horsepower of a V6, the torque of a 4 cylinder, the fuel economy of a V8, that drinks oil like a 2-stroke and goes through inner engine seals like kids go through Halloween candy".

Bollocks about the polishing a turd thing. It's easier to develop a piston engine because of the groundwork that's gone into them beforehand. I doubt Mazda would have made any of them at all if it were truly a turd (either that or they would only have made one).
I might have to agree with you on the being different bit. At least in terms of popularity of various technologies. At the moment, light weight and efficiency are king when it comes to technological differences.

The problem is that it's way behind the curve and Mazda doesn't have the resources; I just don't even see it as an inkling of a dream. One automaker with particularly limited resources just can't get the job done.

I think the main issue with people not liking the rotary is the fact that they weren't educated on the care for the engine. Yes, rotaries need more attention than just putting gas in it and going to the dealer every 15,000 miles for an oil change, but they are so much more rewarding than a conventional piston engine. I mean the sound of the rotaries is just ridiculous. If consumers were just educated and actually bothered to check the oil when the fueled up and learned how to keep them from flooding they wouldn't be as unreliable as people make them out to be. I blame peoples lack of proper care for most of the rotaries failures, but then again that may just be me being naïve and willfully ignorant.
If they would fit the rotary to the MX-5 it would be a blast. That is an easy way to sell shit tons of rotaries. But most likely we will get some Sky Active variant in the ND. I just hope Mazda doesn't fuck the ND up.

Very true. It seems that interesting engineering, for the most part, is a hame for the rich. I'd rather see a solvent Mazda sand rotary than a rotary equipped Mazda on the brink of financial ruin.
Of course I'd rather see a successful Mazda with a rotary car, but it's a tough world for car manufacturers these days.
